A Brief History of the Sigma Nu Kappa Chapter
Established in 1881, the Sigma Nu Kappa Chapter has a rich and storied history at North Georgia College (NGC). The chapter flourished as an integral part of campus life, building a strong brotherhood and tradition among current and alumni fraternity members for over five decades. However, in 1933, NGC transitioned from a four-year institution to a junior college, which led to the revocation of the Sigma Nu charter.
In the wake of the Kappa Chapter's closure, many of the Sigma Nu brothers did not stray far from their shared values and camaraderie. It is believed that some, or perhaps all, of the Sigma Nu members who had been at NGC during those years went on to join the REX Fraternity, which was founded at the University of North Georgia (UNG) in 1916. REX became an active presence at UNG, continuing its legacy until 1972.
The year 1972 marked a significant turning point for Sigma Nu. In May 1972, the Kappa Chapter of Sigma Nu was rechartered at North Georgia College. This reestablishment honored the long history between Sigma Nu and REX, recognizing the deep bonds formed during the years the two fraternities shared a campus. As a testament to this connection, all former and active members of REX who desired to join were initiated into the newly rechartered Sigma Nu Kappa Chapter.
Thus, the Sigma Nu Kappa Chapter’s journey is one of continuity and rebirth—a chapter that, even in its absence, continued to shape the lives of its brothers through shared values and brotherhood. Ultimately, the Kappa Chapter returned stronger than ever, uniting two generations of fraternity men under the Sigma Nu banner.
